Olympian Herb Elliott’s “The Golden Mile” — In The Spotlight

Check out this ABC news article on The Golden Mile — one of the unmissable films featured in our 2024 Run Nation Film Festival showing now.

The Golden Mile is the story of Herb Elliott, an Australian Olympic Gold medal runner and Percy Cerutty, his unorthodox but visionary coach that pushed him to his limits. After an illustrious sporting career, Herb wrote an autobiography in 1961 and then left the world of running behind to focus on his family.

But recently after a fair bit of convincing by journalist Ian Henschke (who had been following Herb’s career for decades), the now 86 year old Olympian, finally agreed to his autobiographical story being documented on film – including a new interview giving insight about Percy Cerutty’s unique coaching techniques. Herb has provided a never seen before family 8mm film and other archival material making The Golden Mile an historic, inspiring and deeply moving film.

Both he and his family insist this will be his last interview, which wraps up a truly historic career.

The film is much more than just athletics  – It’s about how to achieve life goals and what it takes to succeed.

The film also includes guest appearances from two times Olympic 1500m gold medallist Lord Sebastian Coe, now the head of World Athletics, and 2022 1500m Commonwealth Gold Medallist Ollie Hoare. Ollie is the first Australian to win the 1500m event since Herb Elliott.

The filmmaker is Ian Henschke, the cinematographer is Wayne Harley ex ABC TV and Four Corners Foreign Correspondent, and editing is by Sean Lander whose other work includes the groundbreaking Gold Walkley winning series “Labor in Power”.

The 2024 Run Nation Film Festival is now showing The Golden Mile — for a limited time only.
